When the Brain Gets Stuck on Fast Forward

On hypomania, nervous system overload, and the strange line between recovery and acceleration
I have carried a lot of diagnoses over the years. Anxiety. Bipolar. Hypomania. Medication-induced mood episodes.
Depending on which doctor was holding the chart and what was happening in my life at the time, different labels rose to the top. I am not ashamed of any of them. The brain is an organ. Sometimes it gets sick. Sometimes it reacts to medications. Sometimes it does things we do not fully understand. I have spent enough years living inside my own nervous system to know that most of us are trying to make sense of something far more complicated than a single diagnosis can fully explain.
What I have learned from living through hypomanic episodes myself is that most people misunderstand what hypomania actually is. They think it means happiness. Sometimes it does. More often, it means acceleration.
I have experienced medication-induced hypomania from steroids. I have also spent years trying to understand the strange ways my brain responds to stress, illness, hormones, medications, and life itself. Hypomania has shown up at different points in my life for different reasons. Sometimes it was connected to PMDD before my surgery. Sometimes it appeared during periods of physical illness. Sometimes it followed medication changes. Sometimes it seemed to emerge when too many demands were placed on my nervous system at once. Looking back, I can see that there was rarely a single cause. More often, it was a combination of factors slowly stacking on top of one another until my brain crossed a threshold and shifted into a different state.
What keeps bringing me back to this subject is how often people misunderstand what they are seeing. They assume someone is simply excited, overly emotional, unusually productive, or making bad choices. They see the spending but not the altered reward system behind it. They see the irritability but not the overload. They see the energy but not the acceleration. They see the behavior but not the biology.
The biggest misconception is that people in a hypomanic or manic state are simply happier than everyone else.
That is not what it feels like from the inside.
The best way I can describe it is that the brain’s volume knob gets turned up on everything at once. Thoughts become louder. Emotions become louder. Memories become louder. Ideas become louder. Possibilities become louder. The brain begins processing information at a speed that can feel exhilarating, productive, creative, and insightful while also becoming increasingly difficult to regulate. What looks like happiness from the outside often feels more like acceleration from the inside.
That distinction matters, because understanding the difference changed the way I understand myself, the people I love, and the complicated relationship between brain chemistry and behavior.
The Accelerator and the Brakes
Under normal circumstances, different parts of the brain help balance one another.
The limbic system helps generate emotions, motivations, rewards, memories, and reactions. The amygdala acts as part of the brain’s threat detection and emotional alarm system. The prefrontal cortex serves as a filter. It helps us evaluate consequences, prioritize information, delay impulses, and decide what is worth acting on.
Most of us never think about these systems because they work quietly in the background. An idea appears. An emotion follows. The brain evaluates whether it matters. Most thoughts are sorted, filed away, or ignored before they ever become actions. We do not realize how much work this process is doing because it happens automatically. The brain is constantly deciding what deserves our attention and what can safely remain in the background.
In a regulated brain, these systems work together remarkably well. The emotional centers generate information, while the prefrontal cortex helps organize it. One part of the brain says, “This is important.” Another part asks, “How important?” One part says, “Act now.” Another part says, “Let’s think about this first.” Most of the time, that internal conversation creates balance.
During hypomania, that balance begins to change.
The brain starts generating thoughts, emotions, memories, plans, and connections faster than it can properly evaluate them. The accelerator becomes more powerful while the brakes become less effective. Ideas arrive more quickly than they can be sorted. Emotions become louder before they can be fully processed. Possibilities begin multiplying faster than the brain can realistically assess them.
The result is not a lack of intelligence. It is often the opposite.
Many people become more creative, more productive, more energetic, and more connected to ideas. The brain can feel sharper. Faster. More capable. Problems that seemed difficult yesterday suddenly appear solvable. Connections emerge between topics that previously seemed unrelated. The world can feel more interesting, more meaningful, and more full of possibility.
The challenge is that the brain begins treating almost every idea as important.
The normal hierarchy starts to break down.
A passing thought can suddenly feel urgent. A possibility can feel like a certainty. A project can feel like a mission. A concern can feel like a crisis. The brain is not necessarily producing bad ideas. In fact, some of the ideas may be excellent. The problem is that the filtering system is no longer doing its job as effectively. Everything arrives carrying a sense of significance, and that makes it harder to distinguish between what truly deserves action and what simply deserves consideration.
Looking back, this is one of the things I notice most clearly in myself. It is not that my brain stops working. It is that my brain starts working faster than it can regulate. What feels like clarity can sometimes be acceleration. What feels like certainty can sometimes be urgency. What feels like insight can sometimes be a brain assigning too much importance to too many things at once.
That is the difference between having more ideas and having less filtering.
The two can look remarkably similar from the inside.
Why Everything Feels Connected
One of the strangest parts of hypomania is how quickly the brain begins connecting dots.
A memory triggers an idea. The idea triggers a plan. The plan triggers another memory. That memory connects to a relationship. That relationship reminds you of something that happened twenty years ago.
The process can unfold so quickly that it becomes difficult to see where one thought ended and another began. What starts as a simple observation can turn into a chain reaction of memories, emotions, insights, plans, worries, and possibilities. The brain begins moving through information at a speed that feels both exhilarating and completely natural.
To other people, the conversation can sound scattered. To the person experiencing it, everything feels completely logical. The connections feel obvious. In fact, they often feel brilliant.
That is one of the reasons hypomania can be so difficult to recognize from the inside. The experience does not feel disorganized. It feels organized in a way that nobody else seems capable of seeing. Patterns appear everywhere. Connections emerge between events, people, memories, projects, and ideas that previously seemed unrelated. The brain becomes convinced that it is seeing a larger picture.
Sometimes it is. Some of those connections are insightful. Some are creative. Some lead to genuinely good ideas. That is part of what makes hypomania so seductive.
The brain is not simply generating nonsense. It is often generating a mixture of real insight, creativity, memory, intuition, and association all at the same time. The difficulty is that the filtering system is no longer working well enough to distinguish between them.
A meaningful insight and a random association can arrive carrying the same emotional weight.
A brilliant idea and a terrible idea can feel equally convincing. A genuine pattern and a coincidence can feel equally important.
The brain begins assigning significance faster than it can accurately evaluate significance.
Looking back, this is one of the features I recognize most clearly in myself. During hypomanic periods, I often feel as though I have access to information that was already there but somehow hidden from view. Old memories become relevant. New ideas appear constantly. Connections seem to emerge everywhere I look. The experience can feel less like thinking and more like discovery.
The challenge is that discovery and interpretation are not the same thing. The brain is generating possibilities faster than it can verify them.
That is why what feels like clarity in the moment can sometimes look very different once the nervous system returns to a more regulated state.
Dopamine and the Feeling That Everything Matters
When people talk about brain chemistry, they often mention serotonin. Serotonin is important, but it is only part of the story.
Dopamine plays a major role in motivation, reward, novelty, curiosity, and significance. In simple terms, dopamine helps the brain decide what deserves attention. It helps determine what feels exciting, meaningful, worth pursuing, or worth remembering.
Most of the time, this system serves us well. It helps us notice opportunities, stay motivated, learn new things, and pursue goals that improve our lives. It is part of what drives creativity, achievement, exploration, and growth.
During hypomania and mania, however, the brain can begin assigning significance to more and more things.
Ideas feel exciting. Projects feel urgent. Purchases feel justified. Possibilities feel achievable. The future feels close enough to touch.
What makes this difficult is that the feeling is genuine. The person is not pretending. They are not intentionally being irresponsible. They are not usually trying to create problems. The brain genuinely believes these things are important.
This is why someone may suddenly start a business, write a book, volunteer for multiple projects, host a major event, redecorate their house, make large purchases, or completely reorganize their life. From the outside, these decisions can seem impulsive. From the inside, they often feel completely reasonable. In fact, they can feel necessary.
One of the things I have noticed in myself is that the world begins to feel full of possibility. Problems seem solvable. Obstacles appear smaller. Risks seem manageable. Opportunities appear everywhere. The future stops feeling distant and starts feeling immediate.
That can be an incredible feeling. It can also be a dangerous one.
The same system that helps us identify meaningful opportunities can become overly generous with its endorsements. Everything starts receiving a gold star. Every idea feels promising. Every project feels worthwhile. Every plan feels achievable. The brain becomes much better at seeing potential than it is at recognizing limitations.
That does not mean every idea is bad. Some of them are excellent. Some of the projects succeed. Some of the insights are real. Some of the opportunities genuinely are worth pursuing.
The challenge is that the brain begins treating all of them as equally important. A brilliant idea and a mediocre idea can feel exactly the same. A calculated risk and a reckless risk can feel exactly the same. An opportunity worth pursuing and a distraction worth ignoring can feel exactly the same.
The problem is not that the brain stops generating good ideas. The problem is that it becomes harder to tell which ideas deserve action and which simply deserve consideration.
Looking back, that may be one of the most consistent features of hypomania for me. It is not a loss of creativity. It is not a loss of intelligence. It is a loss of prioritization. The brain becomes flooded with possibilities, and everything starts feeling like it matters right now.
That feeling can be exhilarating. It can also be profoundly misleading.
Why Medications Can Trigger It
This is the question I hear most often.
If antidepressants increase serotonin, and serotonin is supposed to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and help regulate depression, why would a medication designed to help someone feel better sometimes trigger hypomania or mania?
It seems backwards.
Most people assume that increasing serotonin should calm the brain down. They picture antidepressants as something that simply makes people happier, more stable, less anxious, or better able to sleep. When someone hears that a medication that increases serotonin may have contributed to hypomania or mania, it sounds contradictory. If the goal is regulation, how does the brain end up becoming more activated instead?
The reality is more complicated than serotonin alone. Serotonin is involved in mood regulation, but it does not work in isolation. The brain is an interconnected system, and changes in one neurotransmitter influence many others. When serotonin changes, dopamine changes. Motivation changes. Reward systems change. Attention changes. Energy levels change. The brain is constantly trying to maintain balance among systems that are all communicating with one another. That is why the same medication can produce dramatically different experiences in different people.
For many people, increasing serotonin helps restore balance. Depression lifts. Anxiety decreases. Sleep improves. The nervous system becomes more regulated. Thoughts slow down. Emotions become easier to manage. The medication helps create the stability that depression had taken away. For those individuals, antidepressants can be life-changing and sometimes life-saving.
For people who are vulnerable to hypomania or mania, however, the same medication can occasionally produce a different result. Instead of simply lifting depression, it can increase activation. The shift is often subtle at first. There may be a little more energy, a little more motivation, a little more confidence, and a little more productivity. The person begins getting things done again. They feel hopeful. They feel engaged with life. After a period of depression, that improvement can feel like a gift.
At first, everyone is happy to see it. The person feels better. Their family feels relieved. Their doctor sees signs that the treatment is working. The challenge is that there is no bright line separating recovery from acceleration. The early stages of hypomania often look very similar to the early stages of recovery. Both involve increased energy, improved mood, greater motivation, and renewed interest in life.
For some people, the brain does not stop at feeling better. It keeps going.
The increased energy becomes restlessness. The confidence becomes impulsivity. The motivation becomes overcommitment. The productivity becomes overdrive. The brain continues accelerating past the point of regulation. The person is no longer simply climbing out of depression. They are moving into a state of activation that can eventually become difficult to control.
That is why hypomania can be so difficult to recognize in its early stages. It often arrives disguised as recovery. The person may sleep less but still feel great. They may become more social, more productive, more creative, and more optimistic. They may take on projects they have been putting off for years. They may finally feel like themselves again. Many of these changes are genuinely positive, which makes it even harder to recognize when the nervous system has crossed from healing into acceleration.
The problem is not that the person suddenly loses intelligence or self-awareness. In fact, many people feel sharper, faster, and more capable during the early stages. The challenge is that the brain’s accelerator is becoming stronger than its brakes. The same activation that fuels creativity and productivity can also reduce caution, increase impulsivity, and make it harder to accurately judge risk, consequences, and emotional significance.
This does not mean antidepressants are bad medications. For millions of people they are extraordinarily effective. It does not mean everyone with bipolar disorder, hypomania, or medication-induced mood episodes will respond this way. It simply means that brains are different. The same medication that restores balance in one nervous system may push another nervous system beyond its optimal range.
Think of it like adding fuel to an engine. Most engines run better. Some engines begin to race. The medication is doing what it was designed to do. The brain is simply responding differently than expected.
That is one reason doctors monitor people carefully after starting antidepressants, especially when there is a history of bipolar disorder, hypomania, medication-induced mood episodes, or previous periods of unusual activation. The goal is never to create hypomania. The goal is to help depression. Sometimes the difficulty is realizing that the line between those two states is not always as clear as we would like it to be.
The Tower Doesn’t Usually Fall Because of One Brick
One thing I have learned from living with hypomania is that episodes are rarely caused by a single event.
People often want a simple explanation. Was it the medication? Was it stress? Was it hormones? Was it illness? Was it lack of sleep?
The honest answer is often more complicated.
For me, hypomania has appeared under different circumstances throughout my life. Steroids have triggered it. PMDD triggered it before my surgery. Physical illness can trigger it, especially when my digestive symptoms become severe. The brain and gut are in constant communication, and I have learned the hard way that when one becomes dysregulated, the other often follows. Emotional overload can trigger it. Major life changes can trigger it. Even positive events can contribute.
That last part surprises people.
We tend to think of mental health episodes as being triggered by tragedy, loss, trauma, or stress. Those things absolutely matter. What people often overlook is that excitement, happiness, anticipation, achievement, and major life transitions can activate the nervous system too. The brain does not simply respond to negative emotion. It responds to intensity.
Looking back at my own life, I can see periods where several things were happening at once. My health would be struggling. Sleep would be inconsistent. Stress would be building. Hormones would be fluctuating. My gut would be inflamed. At other times there would be exciting projects, new opportunities, major family events, or periods of unusually high productivity. None of those things automatically created hypomania on their own, but together they increased the overall load on my nervous system.
I have come to think of hypomania as a threshold condition. A health problem adds a brick. A medication adds a brick. Sleep disruption adds a brick. Hormonal changes add a brick. Stress adds a brick. Excitement adds a brick. Grief adds a brick. Joy adds a brick.
Most of the time the tower holds.
The nervous system compensates. It adapts. It finds its balance again. Human beings are remarkably resilient, and our brains spend an enormous amount of energy trying to keep us regulated despite everything life throws at us.
Then another brick gets added. And another.
Eventually the system reaches a threshold where it can no longer regulate everything being asked of it. The tower does not fall because of one brick. It falls because of the cumulative weight of all the bricks that came before it.
This understanding has changed the way I think about hypomania. I am much less interested in finding one thing to blame than I am in understanding how the entire system became overloaded. Sometimes the final trigger is obvious. Sometimes it is not. Sometimes the last brick gets all the attention simply because it was the one people happened to notice.
What matters is recognizing that the brain does not operate in isolation. Biology, hormones, sleep, medications, illness, relationships, stress, excitement, grief, and joy are all part of the same interconnected system. The older I get, the less I separate mental health from physical health. My brain is not floating around independently from the rest of my body. My nervous system, immune system, digestive system, hormones, emotions, and experiences are constantly influencing one another.
When enough activation accumulates, the brain can shift into a state that feels less like happiness and more like acceleration.
Understanding that has helped me approach these experiences with more curiosity and less judgment. Instead of asking, “What is wrong with me?” I find myself asking a different question.
What was my nervous system trying to carry before it finally ran out of room?
The Part People Rarely Talk About: Dysphoria
One of the biggest myths about mania is that it always feels wonderful. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it feels terrible.
There is a side of hypomania and mania called dysphoria. Dysphoria is not sadness. It is agitation, restlessness, irritability, frustration, and emotional discomfort. Imagine trying to manage one hundred browser tabs at the same time while someone continuously opens more. Every interruption feels bigger. Every disagreement feels louder. Every inconvenience feels more important. The nervous system is already working overtime, and now it is being asked to process even more information, emotion, and stimulation.
From the outside, dysphoria can look like rudeness. People may become impatient. They may snap. They may seem unusually sensitive or argumentative. From the inside, however, it often feels like overload. The person is not simply choosing to be difficult. They are trying to navigate a brain that has become increasingly noisy, increasingly activated, and increasingly overwhelmed.
What makes dysphoria especially challenging is that you are not always interpreting situations the same way everyone else is. A casual comment may feel deeply personal. A disagreement may feel like rejection. A concern may feel like criticism. A delay may feel intentional. A small frustration may feel enormous. The facts have not necessarily changed. The interpretation has.
This is where things become confusing for everyone involved. The emotions are real. The hurt is real. The frustration is real. The person experiencing dysphoria is responding to an experience that genuinely feels threatening, painful, or significant. Meanwhile, the people around them often cannot understand why the reaction seems so intense because they are looking at the same situation and seeing something completely different.
Looking back, this is one of the most difficult parts of hypomania for me personally. The productivity can feel useful. The creativity can feel exciting. The ideas can feel meaningful. Dysphoria is different. Dysphoria strains relationships. It creates misunderstandings. It leaves everyone confused.
I have found myself reacting to situations in ways that made perfect sense to me at the time but made very little sense to the people around me. I have become defensive when I felt attacked, only to realize later that no attack was intended. I have felt deeply hurt by things that others barely noticed. I have interpreted situations through the lens of an activated nervous system and then wondered why everyone else seemed to be having a completely different experience.
This is one of the reasons hypomania can be so confusing to families. The same person who seems energized and optimistic one moment may appear irritated and defensive the next. Happiness, frustration, excitement, fear, creativity, anger, hope, and disappointment can all become amplified at the same time because the volume knob has been turned up on the entire system.
Both sides often end up confused. One person is reacting to the experience their brain is creating. The other person is reacting to what they believe actually happened. Neither fully understands why the other is responding the way they are. That mismatch can create tremendous conflict, even between people who love each other deeply.
Understanding dysphoria does not excuse harmful behavior, and it does not remove responsibility. What it does provide is context. It helps explain why someone who is intelligent, loving, and self-aware can suddenly seem unlike themselves. The person is still there. The nervous system is simply struggling to accurately interpret the world around it.
Why Old Memories Suddenly Return
One thing I have noticed in my own experiences is that old memories often come flooding back.
I think of them as echoes.
Not just old memories, but old versions of myself. Old conflicts. Old dreams. Old fears. Old relationships. Old successes. Old disappointments. Things I have not thought about in years suddenly return with surprising clarity and emotional intensity.
The echoes are always there. Most days they remain in the background. During hypomania, they become louder. The filing cabinet gets thrown open. Suddenly everything feels relevant again.
A conversation from twenty years ago may feel as emotionally important as something that happened yesterday. The brain is not creating new memories. It is pulling old ones into the spotlight. Things that have been quietly stored away suddenly demand attention. Old stories ask to be revisited. Old wounds ask to be reexamined. Old dreams ask whether they might still be possible.
What fascinates me is that these memories do not usually arrive alone. They arrive connected to other memories, other people, other ideas, and other emotions. One memory leads to another. One relationship reminds me of a different relationship. One unfinished question suddenly seems connected to ten others. The brain begins building bridges between events that may have been separated by years or even decades.
That is part of why hypomania can feel so meaningful while it is happening. The experience often creates the sensation that everything is connected. Sometimes those connections are insightful. Sometimes they are simply associations. The challenge is that both can feel equally important in the moment.
I have often felt as though my brain was pulling boxes down from shelves I did not even realize were still there. Memories I thought had been resolved suddenly wanted my attention again. Dreams I had abandoned started looking possible. Old hurts demanded another look. Old accomplishments felt newly relevant. It was as if my mind had decided that every unfinished chapter deserved to be reopened at the same time.
Looking back, I do not think the echoes are the problem. The echoes are always there. The difference is volume.
Most days they exist quietly in the background of my life. During hypomania, the volume gets turned up so high that it becomes difficult to tell the difference between what belongs in the present moment and what belongs in the past.
That is why a memory from twenty years ago can suddenly feel as urgent as a conversation that happened this morning.
The brain is not losing touch with reality. It is losing its sense of proportion. Everything begins asking for attention at once.
What It Feels Like for Me
When steroids triggered hypomanic episodes for me, I did not feel sick. That is one of the reasons these states can be so difficult to recognize, both for the person experiencing them and for the people around them. I did not feel out of control. I did not feel obviously unwell. If anything, I often felt better than I had in a long time.
I felt productive, creative, insightful, and connected. I noticed patterns everywhere. Ideas arrived rapidly. Writing came easily. Projects felt exciting. Problems that had seemed complicated suddenly felt solvable. My brain appeared to have access to information and connections that had previously been harder to reach. At the time, it often felt like clarity.
The steroid episodes are actually easier for me to recognize now because I know they are coming. Steroids are a medication I sometimes need when inflammation becomes severe, and after enough experiences with them, my husband and I have learned what to watch for. We know my brain may accelerate. We know my productivity may increase. We know I may become more energetic, more creative, more emotional, and more reactive.
That does not mean we always catch it perfectly. It does not mean I stop having episodes. It simply means we have more information than we used to.
The predictable trigger gives us a starting point. We pay closer attention to sleep, spending, decision-making, stress, and the pace of my thoughts. Sometimes that awareness helps. Sometimes it doesn’t. Hypomania is not something I have mastered. It is something I have spent years trying to understand.
The episodes that are not connected to a predictable trigger are often much harder to recognize. Sometimes they emerge gradually. Sometimes they seem to build over weeks rather than days. There is no obvious starting point. Instead, there may be stress, illness, hormonal changes, lack of sleep, emotional overload, exciting life events, or simply too many demands on an already overworked nervous system. Those are the episodes that can be the most difficult to identify because the acceleration happens slowly enough that it starts to feel normal.
Looking back, I can see that some of what I was experiencing was acceleration. The volume had been turned up. Not every connection was wrong. Not every idea was bad. There were real insights mixed in with the noise. Some of the things I created during those periods were meaningful. Some of the ideas were genuinely worth pursuing. The challenge was figuring out which was which.
That may be one of the hardest things to explain to someone who has never experienced hypomania. It is not like losing touch with reality entirely. It is more like standing in a crowded room where every voice is speaking at once and trying to determine which one deserves your attention. Some of those voices are wise. Some are impulsive. Some are creative. Some are fearful. Some are grounded in experience. Others are fueled by emotion or urgency. During hypomania, they all become louder together.
What makes the experience so confusing for me is not that I suddenly believe I am right about everything. It is that I become intensely engaged with what I am seeing, thinking, feeling, and creating. Ideas feel exciting. Possibilities feel real. Connections feel meaningful. Projects feel important.
The challenge comes when other people do not experience that same level of intensity. I want them to see what I see. I want them to feel the same excitement. I want them to understand why an idea feels important or why a project suddenly seems urgent.
When they do not, I often experience that disconnect as frustration. I can become aggravated, defensive, or hurt because it feels as though everyone else is missing something obvious. Looking back, I can see that the issue is not that they were wrong or that I was wrong. We were simply operating at different speeds.
My brain was assigning significance to things much faster than theirs was. What felt urgent to me felt optional to them. What felt exciting to me felt ordinary to them. What felt deeply meaningful to me sometimes felt insignificant to everyone else.
That mismatch can create tremendous confusion on both sides. The people around me wonder why I am reacting so strongly, and I wonder why they are not reacting strongly enough.
That is why these states can be so difficult to recognize while they are happening. The experience does not always feel like something is wrong. Sometimes it feels like something is finally right. Only later, when the nervous system begins to settle, can I see the difference between genuine insight and acceleration, between creativity and overactivation, between inspiration and a brain that was simply moving too fast.
The Part That Makes This Complicated
There is another truth that is harder to talk about. Part of me likes it.
Not the confusion. Not the dysphoria. Not the arguments. Not the exhaustion that comes afterward. What I like is the feeling that my brain has suddenly gained access to resources that are normally harder to reach. I write more. I create more. I solve problems faster. I connect ideas that other people do not see. I have started businesses, written books, developed projects, and built things that would not exist if I had never experienced that level of activation.
That is what makes hypomania so complicated.
If it were entirely miserable, nobody would miss it. The early stages can feel productive, exciting, creative, and alive. There is a sense that the world has opened up and possibilities are suddenly everywhere. Ideas arrive faster. Connections appear more easily. Problems that seemed impossible yesterday suddenly feel solvable. Life itself can feel brighter, more interesting, and more full of potential.
One of the reasons hypomania can be difficult to recognize is that some of the ideas genuinely are good. Some of the projects succeed. Some of the insights are real. Some of the connections lead to meaningful work, meaningful relationships, or meaningful change. The challenge is not that the brain stops producing good ideas. The challenge is that it begins treating every idea as equally important, and that is where judgment becomes difficult.
The same process that generates good ideas also generates bad ones. The same confidence that allows me to take risks can make me underestimate consequences. The same speed that helps me work quickly can make me react too quickly. The same emotional intensity that fuels creativity can fuel conflict. What feels like clarity from the inside is not always clarity from the outside.
I have confused people I love. I have misunderstood situations. I have interpreted events differently than the people around me. I have become reactive and defensive when I felt overwhelmed. At times I have been quick to fight when what I actually needed was regulation. Looking back, I can often see that everyone involved was responding to a different version of reality. My emotions were real. My concerns were real. My reactions were real. The problem was that my nervous system was assigning far more significance to the situation than it deserved.
One thing I have noticed is that I generally do better when I am alone. The challenge often comes when my accelerated nervous system collides with other people’s nervous systems. Communication becomes harder. Misunderstandings multiply. My brain is moving at one speed while everyone around me is moving at another. I want people to see what I see. I want them to share my enthusiasm. I want them to understand why something feels important or urgent. When they do not, I often experience that disconnect as frustration.
Neither side fully understands what is happening. They are confused by my reactions, and I am confused by theirs. What feels exciting and obvious to me may feel unnecessary or overwhelming to them. What feels urgent to me may feel optional to them. That mismatch creates confusion for everyone and can strain even the strongest relationships.
The other thing people rarely talk about is the physical cost. The body was never designed to operate at that level of activation indefinitely. Sleep changes. Stress hormones rise. The nervous system stays engaged. Energy gets burned faster than it can be replenished. The brain may feel powerful while it is happening, but the body keeps the score. Eventually the bill comes due.
What feels powerful in the moment can become exhausting over time. That does not mean every insight was wrong. It does not mean every idea was bad. It means that acceleration always comes with a cost. The older I get, the more I appreciate the difference between productivity and sustainability. One can feel amazing. The other keeps you healthy enough to enjoy the life you are building.
I still appreciate many of the gifts that come with an accelerated mind. I have seen what it can create. I have seen the ideas, the projects, the writing, and the connections that can emerge from it. What I understand now is that creativity and well-being are not the same thing. The goal is not to eliminate every spark. The goal is to build a life where the spark does not burn down the house.
The Person Is Still There
This may be the most important thing I have learned.
Hypomania does not create a new person. The loving person is still there. The creative person is still there. The generous person is still there. The difficult person is still there too. The brain is simply operating at a speed it was never designed to sustain.
When someone is in a hypomanic or manic state, arguing with every idea rarely helps. Debating every purchase rarely helps. Trying to reason away every emotion rarely helps. The goal is not to win the argument. The goal is to help the brain regain regulation.
That is something I understand much better today than I did when I was younger.
For much of my life, I felt managed. My family loved me. They supported me. They helped me through some incredibly difficult periods of my life, and I am grateful for all of it. Looking back, I can also see how frightening some of those experiences must have been for the people around me. When someone you love is struggling, the natural instinct is to try to fix the problem, control the situation, or prevent the next mistake before it happens. Those efforts usually came from love, but they often left me feeling broken, disappointing, or like a problem that needed to be solved.
Then I married my husband.
One of the greatest gifts he has given me is that he does not try to manage me. He manages my environment.
There is a difference.
He understands that when my nervous system becomes overloaded, more pressure rarely helps. More arguments rarely help. More criticism rarely helps. Instead, he creates conditions where regulation is more likely to happen naturally. He encourages me to spend the day in the forest. He tells me to write. He protects my quiet. He helps reduce unnecessary stress when he can. Most importantly, he trusts me enough to remain myself while still helping me stay safe.
That distinction changed everything.
He does not treat me like a diagnosis. He does not treat me like a collection of symptoms. He understands that the person he loves is still there, even when my brain is moving too fast. Instead of trying to control my thoughts or challenge every idea, he focuses on helping me create enough space for my nervous system to settle. In many ways, he became the first person who truly understood that regulation and control are not the same thing.
Over the years, I have come to realize that regulation is rarely something another person can force upon us. More often, it emerges from feeling safe enough for our brains and bodies to slow down on their own. Safety matters. Understanding matters. Environment matters. Sometimes the most loving thing another person can do is protect the conditions that allow healing to happen.
Once that happens, the volume begins to come down. The tabs begin to close. The echoes become quieter. The urgency starts to fade. The brain no longer has to assign meaning to everything at once.
And the person can finally hear themselves think again. Because most of the time, they were there all along.
